SpamBots are Math Wizards!

I had a good thing going here with my “Did You Pass Math” captcha plugin. I hardly ever found any spam in my Akismet moderation queue. Unfortunately, my spambot visitors got smarter and smarter until they could finally add simple numbers and my Akismet queue started filling up again.

I’ve changed to a graphic captcha, Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam Image Plugin, so let me see them try to read that! Actually this won’t be too far in the future because I read that some spammers are working on graphic readers to bypass graphic captcha programs so they can keep spamming. *sigh*

This captcha is not bad. I hate those captchas that are hard to read with the squiggly lines and stuff going through the letters. Sometimes it takes a couple times to get the letters right because they are hard to read.

I also don’t like it when you type the wrong letters and it “blanks out” or removes the text from the form field if you type of wrong captcha. You have to re-type the whole message again when it clears the form out.

Does your comment field erase the text if you type in the wrong letters for the captcha?

Yes, it does erase the text if you mistype the captcha and I hate that about it. That’s why I made the words very easy to spell, heh.

Yeah, anna i agree with you. I have image captcha sometimes very hard to read. I mostly should retype 2-3 times. Unfortunately, if this hard read captcha still cannot stop spammer so it is only to make the reader difficult.

Hi Anna,

I’ve released an updated version of the plugin that somewhat addresses the problem of having to re-enter the fields when someone gets the anti-spam word wrong. This was not actually a feature of the plugin itself, but probably something to do with your template or another plugin (check out the behavior on my site to see the difference).

With the new version, if someone gets the anti-spam word wrong, they are presented with a text box with their comment so that they can copy it before they go back.

That sounds great Peter… I’ll be sure to come download the updated version… I like your plugin a lot… Since I’ve been using it I’ve had almost no Akismet spam at all… :)

My comments.php file is a modified version of Kubrick that was modified by the “Brian’s Threaded Comments” plugin…

I was busy over the weekend and just now upgraded the “Custom Anti-Spam” plugin… thanks again for making the change to it…
